
BOWLING GREEN – Tuesday in Bowling Green at the KHSAA Girl’s State Golf Championships, the Lady Marshals shot 362 and then had to wait through the afternoon rounds to see if they made the top 12 teams that would advance to the second day of the tournament. At the end of the day, they were tied for 11th with McCracken County and moving on to Wednesday’s final round.
The Lady Marshals were led on day one by Hallie Riley who shot a 13 over par 85 and Savannah Howell with 14 over 86. Kennadi Spraggs shot 93 and both Megan Hertter and Karissa Jordan shot 98 for a team score of 362.
At the completion of the tournament on Wednesday, Sacred Heart (315-313=628) won the team state title by 42 strokes at +52 over runner-up Shelby County who finished +94. Mason County’s Sarah Fite shot a 1-over 145 (74-71) to win Medalist honors with runner-up going to Murray’s Sarah McDowell who led after the first round with a 1-under 71 and shot 77 on Wednesday to finish +4 with a two day total of 148.
The Lady Marshals finished 9th in the state (362-350=712) improving 12 strokes from the first round of play with each scoring player improving anywhere from two to nine strokes. Hallie Riley finished tied for 30th at +23 (85-82=167) followed by Savannah Howell tied for 38th (86+84=170), Megan Hertter tied for 63rd (98-89=187), Karissa Jordan 67th (98-95=193) to make up the team score and Kennadi Spraggs finished 77th (93-115=208).
Riley began Wednesday at even par through the first six holes after teeing off on #10 and taking a double-bogie, she parred the 11th hole then followed that up with an eagle on 12 and birdie on 13, getting the day off to a great start. Howell started her round off with a birdie on #10 and Hertter who made the biggest improvement from round one, doubled her pars from three to six and drop her double-bogies on day one from nine to four.
The Lady Marshals finished 11th in last years state tournament and improved two spots this year with all players returning next season except Karissa Jordan who will graduate, which gives Coach Stephanie Fisk and team a lot to look forward to.
