Grimes Exceeds Online Voter Registration Goal Ahead of Oct. 11 Deadline

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept. 20, 2016) - More than 40,000 Kentuckians have used the
Commonwealth's new online voter registration portal at GoVoteKY.com<govoteky.com> to
register to vote or update their existing registration, Secretary of State Alison
Lundergan Grimes announced today. The number surpasses the goal that Grimes had set
for the portal.
"Online voter registration has been a game-changer for Kentuckians," said Grimes.
"They're responding overwhelmingly to this new tool because it's easier than ever to
register to vote and update your registration online. And, importantly, it's saving
time and money for government."
More than 3,500 of the approximately 12,700 new voters who registered online are
18-year-olds who will be eligible to cast their first vote in a general election on
Nov. 8. The new voters represent 6,879 Democrats, 4,018 Republicans, and 1,860
Independents or other parties.
Grimes has been traveling Kentucky on a GoVoteKY.com<govoteky.com> Tour since the
launch of the portal in March. Her tour has included stops at colleges,
universities, technical schools, and meetings with civic groups and organizations.
Grimes' discussions with students, community leaders, and Kentuckians from all
backgrounds center on the future of the Commonwealth's elections, including a pilot
project for electronic poll books, and the benefits of online voter registration -
especially in cost savings and improvements in accuracy of voter rolls. Grimes is
also continuing to express the need for early voting and automatic restoration of
voting rights for nonviolent felony offenders to improve participation in Kentucky.
GoVoteKY.com<govoteky.com> is now a one-stop voter portal for voter registration,
voting locations, sample ballots, poll worker sign-up, and other important election
information. The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 8 general election is Oct.
11.
