Pioneer Cemetery Plaque to be Dedicated

The Colonel Alfred Johnston Camp no. 276, Sons of Confederate Veterans, based
in Benton and made up of men from Marshall County who are descendants of Confederate
soldiers from this region, in co-operation with the City of Benton and the Marshall
County Cemetery Board, has scheduled a public dedication of a bronze memorial plaque
on the Plaza, at the Southwest corner of the court Square in Benton on 1 October,
2016, at 12:00 O’clock, noon. The public is invited to attend.
The site, very close to the center of Benton, contains the graves of
many of the earliest settlers of Benton, and includes the remains of
people from all walks of life and all levels of society of the day. The
City of Benton had the plaque cast to honor all those people, and called
upon the Cemetery Board to get it mounted and displayed. Several local
businesses contributed funds and expertise, and the SCV Camp has
prepared a formal dedication event to be held on October 1st. The
ceremony is expected to be brief, and everyone with an interest in local
History is invited to attend.
