DRAFFENVILLE – After their first scheduled scrimmage against Henderson County was cancelled due to bad weather, the Lady Marshals were finally able to take the field in competition on Thursday at Caldwell County picking up two wins, 7-0 by the varsity squad and a 3-0 JV win.

“For a first scrimmage, I was pleased”, Head Coach Michael Boone said. “We got all 18 players in and didn’t allow a goal. We played pretty well and I thought our fitness was good and by the second half, we started to click a little bit.”

Boone was pleased to see goals from multiple players and happy with their two goals off corner kicks, one of which was dis-allowed, an area the coach said his team wasn’t as efficient with last year.

The three veteran seniors this season are (L-R) Kayla Travis, Allie Fiske and Karmen Jackson.

The Lady Marshals will waste no time jumping into their district games with three in their second week of the season on Monday, August 22nd against Mayfield, August 23rd against Graves County and August 25th at Calloway County.

Boone feels the third week will also be a good early season test with games against Greenwood, Murray and Clarksville.

Murray, Graves County and Calloway County should all be top contenders in Region 1, along with the Lady Marshals who play in the always strong 2nd District. Murray and Marshall played twice in team camp this summer, splitting their games.

“Offensively we’re pretty set”, Boone said. “Defensively we had to replace the back line completely so there’s four new players starting there. Some spots are still evolving but we look pretty good as far as the starting line up is concerned.”

A strong JV group from last season moves up in the ranks, a team that allowed two goals in their first game in 2015 and no other goals the rest of season, going undefeated. Two freshman from that JV squad have earned starting positions on this year’s varsity team.

Last season, the Lady Marshals finished 12-5-2 with a season ending loss in the first round of the 2nd District Tournament to Graves County 2-1.

They open the regular season today with a JV girls and boys double-header at home against Graves County (UPDATE: Graves games cancelled) and a varsity game Tuesday against St. Mary at home, a game that was previously schedule to be at St. Mary.

Joining Head Coach Michael Boone are Assistant Coaches Nathan Arant and Savana Smothers.
