SHARPE – Fourth grade students at Sharpe Elementary set out this year to renovate the environmental classroom located in a wooded area behind the school that has been in existence for 20 years.
The vision of former Sharpe Elementary teacher Terri Lampkins, the environmental classroom was host to many students and activities over the past two decades but had in recent years fallen to neglect, especially damage occurred during the 2009 ice storm.
Following several weeks of work, the students celebrated the grand re-opening of the classroom with a ribbon cutting ceremony Monday. Students led the ceremony and spoke about the project and what it means to them, and guided guests on the trail with stops along the way where students spoke about the various learning opportunities for those using the classroom.
Shannon Hamlet is the current classroom teacher in charge of the environmental project.
