On January 15th, 2016 at approximately 2:58 pm, the Sheriff's Office was contacted about a scam to a local citizen.
The victim stated that a "Charles Smith Mountjoy" had sent her a friend request on Facebook and she accepted.
The victim stated that she had messaged "Mountjoy" and had spoken to one of her friends on Facebook that verified the "scam" to be true.
The victim did not know at the time that the scammer had made another Facebook profile (of her friend that verified the scam) and was speaking to her through the "Mountjoy" profile and the friends profile as well.
"Mountjoy" told the victim for a cost of $500, she would receive $100k from the US Government.
"Mountjoy" asked for personal information like her driver's license, name and DOB, Facebook password and phone number.
The victim ultimately sent the scammer $500 and her personal information.
She has since attempted contact with the scammer with no response.
She stated that she received a phone call from the scammer (who's FB picture was a white American male) and the caller had a foreign accent. The public is advised to use caution when giving out any personal information over the phone or email, etc.
Scamming is becoming very popular and they are using several different avenues.
Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it's too good to be true.
