Marshals win both games at Graves’ Holiday Hoopalooza

MAYFIELD – Marshall County’s boys basketball team played on Monday and Tuesday in the Graves County WK&T Holiday Hoopalooza, winning both games on Monday 85-78 in overtime against South Fulton, TN, and Tuesday 56-35 over Henry County, TN.

Against South Fulton, the Marshals saw a 15 point lead early in the second half disintegrate after leading by ten at 34-24 at halftime. South Fulton out-scored the Marshals by six in the third quarter but they held on to a four point lead heading into the fourth.

South Fulton out-scored the Marshals 33-29 in the fourth quarter to make up the four-point difference and send the game into overtime. The Marshals out-scored the Red Devils by seven in the overtime period for the win.

D.J. Pigg led the Marshals with 22 points, hit 8 of 9 from the free throw line and had 4 assists, but struggled from 3-point range hitting just 2 of 19 and as a team they were 4 of 26 from the arc. Dylan Walters scored 21 points in the win and Conner Riley added some valuable minutes off the bench with 10 points.

The Marshals took the court again at Graves County on Tuesday in a 1:30 game against Henry County, TN. Walters came out firing putting the Marshals up 4-0 then a 3-pointer by Pigg gave them a 7-2 lead. Walters again with a three-point opportunity on a basket and foul put the Marshals up 10-2. Free throws by Riley and Walters fourth field goal of the quarter gave them a 17-8 lead.

Pigg hit his third and fourth three of the game in the second quarter with another three added by Brady Morgan to help stretch the Marshals lead to 32-15 at halftime.

Walters began the second half just like the first, hitting the first two baskets for the Marshals and going on to score nine of the Marshals 11 third quarter points to hold on to a 16 point lead.

Up by 19 points at the end of the game, free throws by Morgan with 14 seconds to go gave the Marshals a 21 point win, extending their record to 7-2.

Walters led in the win with 21 points, hitting 5 of 6 from the free throw line followed by Pigg with 20 who was 5 of 8 from 3-point range.

Following a break for Christmas, the Marshals will head to Panama City, FL, for the Arnold Marlin Classic and will play their first game on December 29th at 6:00 against Independence, TN.
