MURRAY – Murray High handed the Lady Marshals their first loss of the season, in their first big test against the pre-season favorite Lady Tigers. Lady Marshals Head Coach Joseph Simmons said his team came out hesitant in their 49-29 loss and took the blame for not having his team prepared.

“We had too many turnovers that gave Murray shot opportunities”, Simmons said. “We have to use this and get better and learn from it. I told the girls in the locker room, everything we messed up on is correctable.”

Turnovers were a big part of the Lady Marshals loss, turning the ball over 21 times and Murray coming up with 12 steals.

Down 16-2 after the first quarter, their only first quarter basket came from Hannah Langhi, on her way to scoring 20 of the Lady Marshals 29 points.

Murray’s scoring was spread around through Brittany Lawson who opened the game with a three, Macey Turley, Morghen Turley, Grace Campbell and two straight steals that led to baskets by Maddie Waldrop who was back in the line-up after dealing with an injury.

The Lady Marshals bounced back with 11 second quarter points, three by Lexee Miller, two from Miyah Davis and six by Langhi, to trail 26-13 at halftime.

Following a 3-pointer by Murray’s Alexandria Mayes to open the second half, Langhi scored six straight points for the Lady Marshals to cut the lead to 10. Murray went on a 6-0 run themselves to finish out the third quarter with a 16 point lead.

The Lady Marshals would pull to within 15 points but that as close as it would get, losing by 20.

“I’m proud of them because they could have folded, but kept battling, pulling to within 10 several times but just couldn’t get over the hump”, Simmons said. Going on to say they will make the adjustments needed and expects his team to do their part to get better.

The Lady Marshals will play Friday at Massac County at 5:00.
