DRAFFENVILLE – Marshall County picked up their second win of the season on Homecoming Friday beating Trigg County 35-14. The Marshals have lost to Trigg County the last two seasons after renewing their series with the Wildcats following an 18 year break.

On the Marshals second possession of the game following a blocked punt by Collin Gunn, the Marshals scored their first touchdown on 4th and 7 on a 31 yard pass from Skyler Smith to Lucas Forsythe.

Leading 7-0 in the second quarter, a Marshall drive highlighted by a 35 yard run by Mason Green was stalled out on a holding penalty on the Marshals and on a fumble recovery by Trigg County. The Marshals would force the Wildcats into a punt which was again blocked by Gunn with a drive that resulted in a 26-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Trevor Fisk for a 14-0 lead.

Gunn, who was back on the field after a three-game absence from an injury suffered in the Murray game, was making his presence known Friday evening with a fumble recovery that gave the Marshals the ball on their own 45 yard line.

On the ensuing drive, Smith connected with Forsythe on a 47 yard pass that was brought back to the 20 on a personal foul call against the Marshals but the drive was capped off with a five-yard touchdown run by Colton Lampley that gave the Marshals a 21-0 halftime lead.

Trigg County got on the board at the 6:26 mark in the third quarter on a 29 yard touchdown pass from Kaleb Skinner to Dalton Henricks.

The Marshals scored their fourth touchdown of the game on a five yard run by Green that was set up on a 50 yard gain by Zach Garland to lead 28-7.

The Wildcats scored again followed a Marshall interception on a six yard run by Skinner with 7:16 to go in the game.

On their next possession, the Marshals drive stalled sending Daniel Gardner in for a 24-yard field goal attempt which was blocked.

It didn’t take long for the Marshals to get the ball back getting an interception by Fisk, going on to score their final touchdown on a five yard run by green and extra point kick by Gardner who was a perfect five for five in the game in point after attempts.

Gunn’s great night was capped off with a final interception with 10 seconds left on the clock.

The Marshals final district game against Apollo at home on Friday will decide who plays on or whose season ends on October 30th. Marshall Head Coach Evan Merrick said in post-game comments, the win over Trigg County was important in his team hoping to end their season on a high note and will prepare for their game Friday with the attitude of a playoff game.

Marshall County had nearly 400 yards in total offense and were led on the ground by Green with a game-high 144 yards on 18 carries. Smith had 145 yards in passing completing 5 of 12, four of those completions going to Forsythe for 119 yards. Fisk, Green and Gunn had the Marshals three interceptions and Eddie Morris had a huge night with 27 tackles, 20 of them solo.
