MURRAY – Bailey Tyree is the 2015 1st Region medalist leading the Marshall County girl’s golf team to a 1st Region Championship Tuesday at Oaks Country Club in Murray. The Lady Marshals beat runner-up McCracken County by 13 strokes to win the title.

Tyree has played on the high school golf team since the 5th grade and this will be her sixth trip to the state tournament, but this time she goes as the 1st Region Champion. Marshall County Athletic Director Jeff Stokes said this could quite possibly be the schools first girl’s team to win the title with research as far back as 20 years.

“I just wanted the team to go because I’ve gone for so long and I didn’t want to go my senior year without them”, Tyree said following her win.

In the next to last group, Tyree was expected to compete for the title with last year’s 1st Region champion Tilghman’s Teri Doss in the final pairing.  Through four holes, Doss had a two-shot lead over Tyree with Calloway’s Earlena Sheets in the mix through four holes moving to even, just one stroke behind Doss.

Marshall County freshman Hallie Riley, made her move right into the the front-runners making a birdie on the 6th hole to move to 1-under, then taking the lead as Doss dropped a stroke to join Tyree at even par. A bogey for Riley on the 10th hole and the three were tied at even par.

Tyree birdied the 10th to take the lead at 1-under while Doss dropped two strokes back and Riley held on to even par. After a bogey on the 12th, Tyree and Riley were tied at even par for the lead but a tough 13th hole for Riley hitting a ball out-of-bounds led to a triple-bogey dropping back to 3-over.

Tyree went on to finish out her final six holes with a bogey and three birdies, the final birdie coming on the 18th for a five stroke victory over Doss who had a bogey on 16 and  double bogey on 17, finishing out her round with a 3-over 75.

Riley carded a 5-over 77 to help lead the Lady Marshals along with Tyree to their team title joined by Savannah Howell with 93 and a 96 from Karissa Jordan. Kennadi Spraggs shot a 98 to round out the Lady Marshals scoring.

First year Head Coach Stephanie Fisk said the team worked extremely hard all season saying, “We’ve put a lot of sweat and tears into this and they deserve it. We set goals at the beginning of the season and this was our team goal and Bailey’s individual goal was to win the 1st Region title.”

McCracken County scored 349 to placed second and also earn a spot in the state tournament led by Allison Hane with 82, Jessica Stephens 88, Carley Beatty 87 and Adeline Edwards 92. Murray placed third with 361 and Graves County fourth with 399.

Along with Tyree, Doss and Riley in 4th, three more players earned individual spots in the state tournament including Murray’s Sarah McDowell in 3rd with 77,  Sheets shot 78 for 5th and Graves County’s Nicole Taylor in 6th with 80.

The girl’s KHSAA State Tournament will be held in Bowling Green October 8-10.
