DRAFFENVILLE – Marshall County Head Coach Evan Merrick said, “this is a loss that stings knowing we had enough chances to come out with a win and just didn’t do it”, after the Marshals 26-22 loss to Ballard Memorial on Friday.
The Marshals led the Bombers in total offensive yardage 332-312, with 196 yard rushing and 136 passing. Ballard Memorial had 77 yards on the ground in 235 in the air.
Dalton Nelson led the way for the Marshals on the ground with 21 carries for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns. Mason Green added 31 yards on 8 carries.
Quarterback Skylar Smith threw for 136 yards going 11 for 21 with 2 touchdowns. Smith’s top receiver was Bryson Jessup who caught 4 passes for 61 yards. Collin Gunn had 3 receptions for 36 yards and 1 touchdown and Tristen Prange added 1 reception for 29 yards.
Eddie Morris led the Marshals in tackles with 17, 11 of those solo and 6 assisted along with Grant Johnson with 10 tackles, 2 solo and 8 assisted.
“We felt like we let a lot of good opportunities get away from us against Ballard County”, Merrick said. They came in and made plays when they had to and at the end of the night we came up short. We did several good things especially in our running game. Dalton Nelson getting over 160 yards on the ground proves what we can do when everyone is on the same page. We also threw the ball well at times. Any time you have four turnovers in a game and can’t force the opponent into any puts you in a tough spot.”
“Now its time to shift our focus to next weeks game against Calloway. There is plenty for us to play for against the Lakers.”
Both Marshall County and Calloway County will come into Friday’s game at 0-2 with a lot to prove in a 7:00 kickoff in Murray.
