BENTON – The Marshall County Fiscal Court will hold another alcohol sales ordinance workshop Monday morning in the Fiscal Court Room upstairs at the Courthouse at 9:30.
Judge-Executive Chyrill Miller said the county has until 60 days after the local option was certified to pass an alcohol ordinance. The vote was certified Aug. 5, making the deadline Oct. 4.
The ordinance will govern location of alcohol-selling businesses (including proximity to schools, day cares and churches); hours of operation; Sunday sales, licensing fees, taxes and other issues related to alcohol. Miller said she will serve temporarily as Alcoholic Beverage Control Officer until the new, permanent judge-executive is elected in November. Kevin Neal and Melonie Chambers are running respectively as the Republican and Democratic candidates in the election. Miller said she will leave the appointment to them.
“Comments on Sunday sales have been mixed. I personally have received no negative comments, but some citizens have called their county commissioners about the issue. Some people have called in favor of Sunday sales, and some have called against,” Miller said.
After this workshop meeting, Miller said the Fiscal Court will meet on a special schedule next month. Regular meetings will be rescheduled to Sept. 8 and Sept. 29. Miller is hopeful to have the second reading of the ordinance at one of these meetings.
