Fern Fest in all about music and this year there’s going to be a lot more music for the event that is set for Labor Day weekend, September 3, 2011 in Calvert City’s Memorial Park. Patty Coakley, one the organizers of the event that is held in Calvert City annually, released a finalized schedule for Fern Fest this morning during the Calvert Area Development Association meeting at CFSB in Calvert City. Fern Fest is a free admission event and draws a larger crowd every year.
In addition to the Marshall County High School Band and the Paducah Jazz Orchestra the Four Rivers Church band and 570 North will also be playing for Fern Fest. Fern Fest is named in honor of the late Jim and Carolyn Fern who operated the Kentucky Music Educators Association from their Calvert City real estate and insurance office for many years. Jim was formerly a band director and play for years in jazz bands. The Fern’s were also a big part in the Calvert City Follies production that was held on stage at Calvert City Elementary School.
Coakley has worked to grow Fern Fest into a cultural event that also includes a children’s art show and a demonstration of working artist. In addition to the music and art show there will be a dedication service for several new park benches that have been placed in the park to honor the service of Calvert City residents to the community.
The schedule includes the opening of the children’s art show and activities at 3 p.m. The music starts with 570 North at 3:45 p.m. The working artists demonstrations begin at 4 p.m. The Calvert City Lion’s Club will begin serving their locally famous burgers at 4 p.m. The money from the Lion’s food booth will be used to provide sight services for people in this community. Four Rivers Church Band will take the stage at 4:30 p.m. The Marshall County High School Band the “Marching Marshals” will play on stage under the direction of Band Director Ronnie Payton at 5 p.m.
The dedication service for the new benches that have been placed in Memorial Park will begin at 5:30 p.m. and Calvert City Mayor Lynn Jones will announce those new additions to the park at that time. He will recognize both those who are being honored with the benches and those who made the donations. Mayor Jones is expected to honor at least four families or individuals for which memorial benches will be placed in the park.
At 6 p.m. the art show winners will be announced and then at 6:30 p.m. the Paducah Jazz Orchestra will play under the direction of Doug Van Fleet.
Fern Fest is sponsored by Calvert Area Development Association, the City of Calvert, Marshall Arts Commission with the assistance of the Kentucky Arts Council and Community Financial Services Bank
