Marshals shut out Mustangs 4-0

In a re-match of last season’s First Region title game that McCracken County won 1-0 to end the Marshals season, Thursday’s game at Colburn Stadium belonged to Marshall County. Despite the scoreless first half, the Marshals controlled possession the majority of the time, getting a lot of good looks but unable to find the net – but that all changed in the second half.

Under four minutes in, their persistence paid off with a goal by Williams Lynch off an assist from Alex Shaverin. It remained 1-0 until near the 10′ mark when Collin Riley scored to make it a 2-0 game. Not letting up, the Marshals scored two more goals, the third from Kian Court with just over seven minutes to go and the final goal by Preston Lamb in stoppage time.

“We’ve had to figure out how to sustain and keep going and keep at it and keep doing what we do”, Coach Bryan Blevins said in post-game comments to WCCK’s Aaron Clayton. “I think once we got one, we we’re going to have a little fun.”

It was the most goals scored against McCracken County for the Marshals in the eight years the two teams have played – the Marshals all time record against the Mustangs is 8-3-2.

“We played well”, Blevins said. “I think we got our defensive back line figured out a little bit, they’re kind of a little more on the same page. I’m proud of them. This is a big one, I’m glad we got it.”

The Marshals had 21 shots on the night, 14 of those on goal. The Mustangs had 10 total shots with four on goal. Keeper Steven Claborn had a good night with four nice saves. McCracken keeper Grayson Parish had 10 saves.

The Marshals improve to 8-0-1 and will play next at Daviess County on Saturday at 7:00.
