Marshals win season-opener at Murray Invitational

Three-time reigning Marshall County boys golf team opened the season with a win at the Murray Invitational on Friday at Murray Country Club. (L-R) David Jack Morris, Ryan Stokes, Gunner Hoover, Trey Wall, Camdyn McLeod, Paxton Carter and Hayden Powell.

The 2021 high school golf season opened Friday for the Marshals who will be aiming for a fourth consecutive First Region title. Eleven of the area’s top teams teed it up in the Murray Invitational at Murray Country Club. The Marshals won by eight strokes over McCracken County with a team total of 302.

The win was also the first for new head coach Travis Ross who took over the reigns from 2020 First Region and KHSAA Coach of the Year Keith Bell who retired after seven years as the Marshals head coach.

The Marshals were led by Trey Wall who finished 2-under (70) which placed him in a second place tie with McCracken County’s Abe Dumes. St. Mary’s Rocco Zakutney won medalist honors with a 5-under round of 67.

Ryan Stokes and Camdyn McLeod each shot rounds of 76, David Jack Morris carded an 80, followed by Gunner Hoover with a round of 83. Playing as individuals for the Marshals, Paxton Carter shot 84 and Hayden Powell 89.

Rounding out the top five individuals behind Zakutney, Wall and Dumes, Tilghman’s Jack Butts shot 73 to finish fourth and McCracken’s Camryn Beatty finished fifth with a 2-over 74.

The Marshals will head to Bowling Green Country Club on Tuesday, Aug. 2 to play in the Gator Invitational.
