Trap Team takes third at Kentucky Clay Target State Tournament

Saturday in Berea, Ky., the Marshall County High School trap team took third in the Clay Target League State Tournament.

Twenty-five members of the Marshall County trap team competed Saturday in the 2021 Kentucky State High School Clay Target League State Tournament held at the Central Kentucky Gun Club in Berea, Ky.. With the largest number of competitors of any team represented, Marshall County placed third.

Jessamine County placed first and Rowan County second. Locally, the teams from McCracken County finished fifth and Calloway County sixth.

The five highest scores on each team determine placing. Top five Marshall County scores came from Ethan Riley 97, Jacob Snyder 94, Brighton Newnum 94, Chase Derkacy 92 and Gavin Wilson 88.

Riley’s score of 97 was third best in the Varsity division but a three-way tie for second place moved him into a fifth place tie.

Three team members achieved a 25 straight in their four rounds of 25 in competition. Ethan Riley with two, Blake Robinson and Gavin Wilson with his first ever 25 straight. Shooting 50 straight – back-to-back 25 straights – was Brighton Newnum.

More top finishes came from Hayden Brummitte finishing second in Jr. Varsity Female, Nathan Stahl second place in Novice Male and Emma Driver second in Novice Female.

“I’m so proud of their performance and even more proud of what I have seen this sport do for each of them”, Team Sponsor Jourdan Griffith said.

Griffith, who took position in 2016 in Kentucky’s inaugural year for the sport of trap shooting, wrapped up her sixth and final season with the team. A team that grew from 12 that first season to 42 members in grades 6-12 this season.

“I have so enjoyed my time with the team and what a blessing it is to have something in your life that makes stepping away so difficult to do”, Griffith said. “I am so proud of this program and all that have participated and helped to make this team a possibility.”
