Lady Marshals shut out Graves County 13-0

In just four innings, the Lady Marshals racked up 13 runs off 11 hits to shut out Graves County 13-0 on Monday. Leading at the plate, Kinley Edwards went 2-for-3 and knocked one over the fence, Cayson Conner was 3-for-3 and Presley Jezik 2-for-2.

The Lady Marshals speed got the job done with eight stolen bases – two each by Charley Pursley and Presley Jezik and one a piece from McKenzie Elkins, Madyson Morton, Sarah Stokes and Sarenna Tomassi.

Gabbi Lovett and Tia Thorpe combined to pitch the shutout – Lovett getting the win over three innings, allowing no hits and striking out one.

Pursley kicked off the bottom of the first with a bunt and reaching on an error. She then stole second, stole third and scored on a wild pitch. Pursley has 22 stolen bases, fourth best in the state, and is just one away from breaking the single season record at Marshall County and leads the Lady Marshals with a .644 batting average coming into Monday’s game.

Jezik laid down an RBI bunt, Conner scored on a wild pitch and an RBI by Tomassi made it a 4-0 game. A ground ball hit by Pursley brought in Sarah Stokes in the second for a 5-0 lead.

Conner led off with a single in the bottom of the third and brought around to home plate on Edwards home run. A double by Riley Piercefield and single off the bat of Elkins brought in two more and the Lady Marshals took a 9-0 lead into the fourth inning.

The final four runs in the bottom of the fourth came in on a single by Edwards after Conner and Anna Vasseur led off with hits. Conner crossed home plate on an error, a bases loaded walk by Piercefield brought in a run and Jezik scored on a wild pitch.

The Lady Marshals (11-5) will play their second district game at Murray on Tuesday, a game they need to win after the Lady Tigers won the season-opener 6-2.

After stealing second, Sarenna Tomassi looked to beat the throw stealing third but was called out in the bottom of the third inning.
