Lovett pitches no-hitter, Lady Marshals beat top ranked Male in Dan Cummins Classic

Following a 9-1 win on Thursday over Paducah Tilghman, the Lady Marshals played three games on Saturday in the Dan Cummins Classic in Georgetown, Ky. They beat Madison Southern 4-0 behind a no-hitter from pitcher Gabbi Lovett, then topped #1 ranked Male 7-6 before falling in their final game of the day, 8-6 to Pendleton County.

Against Tilghman (3-4), top hitters were Layne Pea who went 4-for-4 at the plate, Charley Pursley 3-for-5 and Presley Jezik 2-for-4. Pea, Kinley Edwards and Riley Piercefield all hit doubles in the win and Jezik led in RBIs with two.

A 3-run top of the third with runs scoring on Piercefield’s double, Sarah Stokes steal of home plate and a single by Pursley got the Lady Marshals on the board. They took a 4-0 lead on an RBI single by Jezik in the top of the the fifth and put the game away with a 5-run seventh inning. Those runs coming in on a double by Edwards, ground out by Jezik, singles by McKenzie Elkins and Pea and a based-loaded run scoring when Chloe Coursey was hit by a pitch.

Gabbi Lovett earned her first win of the season in her first game back in the circle, allowing just one hit.

Gabbi Lovett threw a no-hitter over six innings in the Lady Marshals first win of the day Saturday in the Dan Cummins Classic while striking out four. Their five hits were spread among Pursley, Vasseur, Edwards, Piercefield and Elkins. Pea had both RBIs in the win.

Their 1-0 lead in the top of the second came on a ground out hit by Pea that scored Edwards. Three runs in the top of the fifth came on a based load walk to Pea and a ground ball hit by Cayson Conner who reached on an error that brought in Vasseur and Edwards.

Two hours after their noon game, the Lady Marshals beat top ranked Male 7-6 on 10 hits, holding off the Bulldogs 6-run rally after they took a 7-1 lead in the top of the fourth.

A 2-out homer by Conner in the top of the second scored two runs, a single by Elkins and double by Pursley brought in two more for an early 4-0 lead.

Leading 4-1 heading into the top of the third, they added one more run on the second home run of the game off the bat of Edwards.

Two more runs in the top of the fourth came on a double by Elkins and the senior went on to steal third base then score the final run of the game on a wild pitch.

Male scored two in the bottom of the fourth and one in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Lady Marshals lead to 7-4. A double by senior McKenna Page in the bottom of the sixth made it a one point game and they left the tying run stranded at third with the final out.

Lovett earned the win over five and two thirds innings, allowing nine hits, four runs and one strike out. Six doubles in the win came from Conner, Elkins, Edwards, Piercefield and Pursley.

The Lady Marshals fell a couple runs short in their 6:00 game at Great Crossing Park against Pendleton County. After trailing 8-3, the put up three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Lady Cats lead down to two and they went on to take the win 8-6.

Pursley was perfect at the plate going 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs. Hits also came from Conner, Jezik, Pea and Piercefield.

Already down 3-0 going into the bottom of the first, the Lady Marshals scored on a single by Conner. Down 8-1 in the bottom of the third, they added two more runs on Pursley’s triple and a sacrifice fly by Conner.

Their 3-run bottom of the fourth began on a sacrifice fly by Sarenna Tomassi and singles by Piercefield and Pursley made it an 8-6 game.

Lovett, Thorpe and Emily Garland shared pitching duties, allowing a combined 11 hits and six earned runs.
