Lady Marshals stun Murray in 71-21 win

Sophie Galloway was dialed in on Tuesday at Taylor Gymnasium in Murray. The senior led the Lady Marshals with 22 points in their 71-21 win over the Lady Tigers.

Holding Murray to their lowest point total as far back as you can currently look on the KHSAA scoreboard to the 1997-98 season – the Lady Marshals held the Lady Tigers to 21 points in Tuesday’s 71-21 district win at Taylor Gymnasium.

It didn’t matter that Cayson Conner was nursing an ankle injury – the senior dressed in case she was needed. The Lady Marshals were clearly in control after jumping out to a 13-4 first quarter lead and out-scoring Murray 21 to nine in the second quarter, Presley Jezik hitting two straight 3-pointer to end the first half on a 34-13 lead.

Sophie Galloway scored 16 of her team-leading 22 points in the second half, 12 of those coming in the third quarter, the senior holding her own in the paint with the quick turnaround shot the Lady Tigers couldn’t defend.

Jezik finished off the third quarter like the second, hitting her third 3-pointer to send the Lady Marshals into the final quarter with a 54-20 lead.

Galloway scored the first four of the fourth, 3-pointers from Jezik and Maddie Darnall and basket by Mia Teague fueled a 12-0 run that ended on a free throw by Murray’s Riley Campbell. That free throw would be the Lady Tigers only point of the fourth quarter, the Lady Marshals cruising on to win by 50 and pick up their ninth straight win.

Averaging 18 points per game, Murray’s leading scorer Angela Gierhart was held to nine points and Mackenzie Turley who is averaging 11.8 point per game to just two points.

After another district game on Friday against Calloway County at home, the Lady Marshals were scheduled to play Boyd County on Saturday – a much anticipated game between two top 10 teams. Boyd County is currently under COVID-19 protocols and will not be playing but they hope to find an opponent and still make the trip to Butler County to play in the Statewide Mortgage Valentine Shootout.
