Lady Marshals top Bowling Green, Marshals fall to UHA

Jada Driver, pictured in last season’s 1st Region Tournament, led with 18 points – all from 3-point range – in the Lady Marshals 60-28 win over Bowling Green.

Less than 20 hours after their 67-60 loss in Bardstown to Bethlehem High School, the Lady Marshals were back on the court in their second game of the season at Bowling Green High School on Saturday.

Behind 18 points from Jada Driver, all from 3-point range, and double figures from Cayson Conner with 14 and Layne Pea with 10 – the Lady Marshals picked up their first win of the season, 60-28 over the Lady Purples.

The Lady Marshals led 22-9 at the end of the first quarter and went up 38-14 at halftime, going on to out-score Bowling Green in the second half 22-8 in their 60-28 win.

Pictured in last year’s 1st Region Tournament, Zion Harmon’s 37 point game against UHA wasn’t enough to lift the Marshals over the Blazers on Saturday.

Zion Harmon’s 37 points led the Marshals in Saturday’s 77-68 loss to University Heights, their first loss in this early basketball season following wins over Trigg County and Thomas Nelson. It was the first win for UHA who opened the season with two losses to Paducah Tilghman and Owensboro Catholic.

A 3-0 start by UHA was wiped out on five straight points by Harmon. The Marshals took their largest lead of the game at 17-10 and held a 21-18 lead at the end of the quarter.

Tied at 23 in the second, senior KJ Crump who scored 17 for the Blazers, dropped in a three for a three point lead that stretched out to six before Cole Mills cut it back to four for the Marshals. Still down by four at 33-29, Harmon’s three pointer cut the lead down to one and they were knotted up again at 34 on a bucket by Mills but trailed 38-36 at halftime.

Trailing 48-44 in the third quarter, a 7-0 run by the Marshals that ended on a basket by DJ Quarles,  put them back on top 51-48 and they held a slight lead until William Bryan gave UHA a one-point edge at 56-55. Another three from Harmon put the Marshals back up by two before Bryan scored in the closing seconds to put the Blazers up by one at 59-58 to end the quarter.

Down 70-68 with 1:40 remaining, the Marshals fell victim to a UHA 7-0 run that finished out the game, six of the seven points coming on free throws by senior Amani McGee, to get win number one over the Marshals 77-68.

Their next game comes on Friday in the first district game of the season at Calloway County (7:30) and the home game schedule will open on Monday (Jan. 18) against McCracken County.
