Eddyville resident charged with criminal offenses

On January 9, 2021 at 2:05am, Deputy Keith Suits of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office was on patrol on US 641, approximately 3.5 miles North of Eddyville when he met a silver, 2011 Dodge Nitro in which the operator failed to dim his headlamps and had a taillight violation. As Deputy Suits was turning around to perform a traffic stop on this vehicle, the operator fled South bound on US 641 at a high rate of speed.

Deputy Suits lost sight of the vehicle. The vehicle was located minutes later when two motorists stopped to render aid of a single vehicle collision at the intersection of US 62, US 641, & KY 3305.

The investigation revealed the offender apparently waited until the vehicle’s owner had fallen asleep at his home to access his vehicle keys and steal the 2011 Dodge Nitro. After stealing the vehicle, the offender traveled to US 641. The offender fled from the presence of the deputy’s vehicle on US 641 and accelerated to speeds in excess of 100mph.

At the intersection of US 62, US 641, & KY 3305, the offender lost control of the vehicle and hit a metal utility pole head-on at speeds estimated to be in excess of 80 mph. The offender then fled the scene on foot before being picked up by a passing motorist and taken home.

The offender was located at his home and detained without incident. The victim was notified and confirmed the vehicle was stolen. The offender was identified as Cameron B. Doles (18) of Eddyville. He was arrested and charged with the following criminal offenses:

Failure to Dim Headlights

Vehicle Taillight Violation

No Operator’s License

Leaving the Scene of an Accident

Theft by Unlawful Taking-Auto (Under $10,000)

At the time of this incident the offender was on bond for two other auto theft related offenses out of Lyon Circuit Court and an unrelated criminal offense out of Lyon District Court.

The stolen vehicle was damaged substantially. In addition, the traffic signal light infrastructure (i.e. metal utility pole) which was impacted during the collision received damage which resulted in the traffic signal wiring to lower. This necessitated the KY Transportation Cabinet to dispatch a signal crew to repair this equipment.

The offender was transported by Lyon County EMS to the Caldwell County Medical Center for treatment of his injuries sustained during the collision. He was later lodged in the Crittenden County Detention Center. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Lyon County EMS and the KY Transportation Cabinet. The investigation is continuing by Deputy Keith Suits.
