Marshals shut out Paducah Tilghman 10-0 in opener

William Lynch found the net twice, scoring the second and third goals, in the Marshals 10-0 season-opening win over Paducah Tilghman at Jetton Field.

Monday evening at Paducah Tilghman’s Jetton Field, the Marshall County boy’s soccer team began their much anticipated 2020 fall season.

Despite temperatures taken, masks worn and social distancing…it was just good to be back! With the exception of golf, the remaining fall sports teams have had Sept. 7 circled on the calendar since July 28.

This was the Marshals eighth straight year to open against the Blue Tornados. The 10-0 win was also their eighth straight in a season-opener over Tilghman, giving first-year Head Coach Bryan Blevins his first win. Blevins was coaching against former Marshall County players Blaine Skeen who is the first-year head coach at Tilghman and assistant coach Riley Solomon.

“I’m just glad to get the first game over with to be honest”, Blevins said. “I don’t guess I saw it going this well. I know we’ve been preparing but you just never know when you go through the things that pretty much everybody has been through…you don’t know what you’re team really looks like.”

Blevins said he thought his players did a good job taking advantage of scoring opportunities. Of their 34 shots in the game, 19 were on goal. In contrast, Tilghman took one shot and had no shots on goal.

Just over two minutes in, Collin Riley gave the Marshals their first goal of the 2020 season and 12  minutes later, William Lynch found the goal twice within a minute to put the Marshals up 3-0. John Wood made it a 4-0 game at the halfway point of the first half followed by a goal on a penalty kick from Eric Hicks to make it 5-0. Kian Court found the net to finish off the half with a 6-0 lead.

The Marshals scored four goals in the first 18 minutes of the second half to close out the game. Those goals came from Tyler Treas, Nick Mighell, Collin Riley with his second of the game on a penalty kick and the 10th goal from Jerrico Evans.

They will be tested in their home-opener Tuesday night in the first district game against Murray, a double-header with the Lady Marshals who will be taking the field first in their season-opener at 5:30. District opponents will only meet once this season turning each game into must-win situation for post-season seeding.
