Lady Marshals begin quest for 21st region title

Abby Bevil is one of many talented sophomores that already have plenty of varsity experience for the Lady Marshals going into the 2020 season.

Sept. 8 can’t come soon enough for the Lady Marshals soccer team, a date that ushers in the 2020 season at home against Murray in a double-header with the Marshals. The team will be defending their district and regional titles, aiming for the fourth straight in both.

Last year’s veteran team of nine seniors finished 18-3-4 which included 18 shutouts and out-scored their opponents 91-14. The 2019 season ended in a first round 2-1 loss to Greenwood who went on to win the state championship.

This year’s much younger squad has just two seniors but are loaded with talented juniors and sophomores who saw plenty of playing time last season and will have no problem stepping in to continue the winning tradition and go for the program’s 21st regional title.

Soccer takes the biggest hit to their schedule with KHSAA guidelines due to COVID-19 and will play just over half of their normal schedule with post-season play starting Oct. 12. District opponents play each other twice in a regular season to determine post-season seeding, but under new guidelines, if there are two games played with a district opponent, the first game will determine seed.

Head Coach Michael Boone enters his 13th season at the helm of the program, joined by assistant coaches Andy Pagel, Erica Jarchow, Karen Carmack and Rachel McWilliams.
