Marshall County boys competed in the Kentucky Cup on Wednesday, an invitational played at the University Club of Kentucky course. Playing without Jay Nimmo who was participating in an AJGA event in Louisville, the team finished tied for seventh in the field of 20 of the top teams in the state.

Their team score of 317 (+33) was 13 strokes out of making the top four cut to play in today’s match play round. The top four included Lexington Christian Academy #1 (291), Madison Central (293), Taylor County (303) and Ryle (304)

Trey Wall shot the low round for the Marshals at 76 (+5) to tie for 17th, Camdyn McLeod tied for 28th with 78 (+7), Preston Futreel shot 81 (+10) to finish in a tie for 47th, Hayden Powell tied for 49th with a round of 81 (+11) and in his first high school tournament, Ryan Stokes shot 88 (+17) to finished tied at 72nd.

Madison Central’s Warren Thomas shot the low round of the day, carding a 6-under 65.

“I told our players prior to playing in this year’s Kentucky Cup that they had an opportunity to show themselves and others how well they could play without having Jay on the team”, Coach Keith Bell said. “Our players embraced that challenge and went out and performed well against the top players in the state.  Both Camdyn and Trey had one hole during the round that hurt their overall score today. Preston and Hayden stayed strong during their rounds and never let down one bit. I was proud of Ryan’s effort during his first high school golf tournament and know he gained some valuable experience to learn from.”

Bell said it would have been easy for the team to have a let down not having Jay there but that was not the case at all.

“These players are competitors, individually they want to play well but they also want the team to perform well too”, Bell said.

Friday, the Marshals will head to Danville, Ky. to compete in the Battle of the Bridge tournament at Old Bridge Golf Club. They will go up against an extremely strong field and will be tested once again. From there, they will travel back to Lexington to play in the Bronco Invitational at Greenbriar Country Club on Monday.
