Work zone lane restrictions winding down on safety projects at two Paducah intersections

PADUCAH, Ky. (March 25, 2020) — A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is winding down work zone lane restrictions for safety enhancements that started March 16 at two Paducah intersections.

Work zones should be coming down this afternoon at the U.S. 60 intersection with KY 731/North 32 Street & Downs Drive in Paducah and at the U.S. 45-Business/Kentucky Avenue intersection with U.S. 60-Business/South 4th Street- in Paducah.

Motorists should be alert for an electrical crew working on traffic signal upgrades at these intersections in coming weeks. While much of that work can be completed along right-of-way without disrupting traffic, some temporary lane restrictions may be require to facilitate the remaining work during daylight hours.

Weather permitting, the contractor plans to ramp up work at the KY 58/KY 131 intersection east of Mayfield in Graves County starting Monday, March 30, 2020. Safety upgrades at this intersection include LED enhanced signage, thermal rumble strips, pavement markings, and construction of a mountable median with curb and gutter to better define nearby business entrances. This intersection is at KY 58 mile point 8.156mm and KY 131 Graves County mile point 0.0mm.

Motorists should be alert for one-lane traffic with alternating flow controlled by flaggers to facilitate the required work. Some minor traffic disruptions are possible when trucks are delivering concrete and other materials to the worksite. This work zone will be active during daylight hours anytime weather conditions allow.

Additional intersections scheduled for safety enhancements as part of this project later in the 2020 construction season include:

U.S. 60/Jackson Street at South 27th St- Paducah
New signage and pavement marking upgrades (U.S. 60 at 13.488mm)

U.S. 60 at Allen Lane and County Park Road- Paducah
Traffic signal system upgrades including dual red signal heads with reflective backplates, turn lane radar vehicle detection, new pavement markings, signage upgrade, and curb/gutter with ADA compliant sidewalk ramps (U.S. 60 at 11.927mm).

Work at all of these locations in Paducah are part of a Highway Safety Improvement Project (HSIP). One lane of travel will be maintained at all times to minimize traffic impact and delays. Lane restrictions will be removed when work is completed for the day.

The contractor has 60 days to complete work at each intersection. Appropriate caution is required where equipment, flaggers, and construction personnel are along the roadway near traffic flow.

According to KYTC District 1 Chief Engineer Kyle Poat the safety work is specific to traffic conditions at each intersection. Improvements range from bringing traffic signals up to date and adding new signage to improving sidewalk ramps, curbs, and pavement markings.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will attempt to provide timely notice as the work progresses.

Harper Construction, LLC, is the prime contractor on this $335,931 group intersection safety project. The target completion date for all work in this contract is June 30, 2020.
