Post-season tournament, athletic event changes due to COVID-19 concerns

(March 13, 2020) – Check back here for more cancellations/postponements on a local, regional and national level as they are announced.

As nearly everyone that follows sports is aware, Wednesday, Mar. 11 was one of the craziest days in the sports world from high school to professional events with cancellations due to COVID-19 concerns. It has spilled into an equally as unprecedented series of announcements on Thursday, Mar. 12 and beyond.


LOCAL

• (3-12-20) Marshall County Track and Field has canceled the Invitational of the South on March 28.

• (3-13-20) Marshall County Dynamo soccer will be suspending all practice and games starting Monday, Mar. 16 through Friday, Mar. 27, similar to the school closings. Will reevaluate at that point.

• (3-13-20) KHSAA has eliminated high school and middle school spring football activities.

• (3-13-20) KHSAA declares a dead period for all sports and sport-activities, regardless of season, effective immediately. This runs through Sunday, April. 12. CLICK HERE to read the full release.

• (3-13-20) March 17-18 – College Fishing Open on Kentucky Lake – POSTPONED, will be rescheduled

• (3-13-20) Marshall County Bass Fishing Irish Spring tournament scheduled for Sat., Mar. 14 canceled due to KHSAA dead period for all sports through April 12. Will be rescheduled as soon as possible.

• (3-12-20) KHSAA suspends play in the Girl’s Sweet Sixteen before the Lady Marshals game against Henderson County. The Boy’s Sweet Sixteen was also canceled.


REGIONAL/KENTUCKY

• (3-17-20) SEC announces cancellation of spring sports seasons and spring football games.

• (3-16-20) 146th Kentucky Derby postponed until Sept. 5

• (3-16-20) Keeneland had canceled the 2020 Spring Meet.

• (3-16-20) The Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) announced the cancellation intercollegiate competitions, including OVC Championships, through the end of the 2019-2020 academic year. All team practices suspended until April 3, at which time will be re-evaluated.

• (3-12-20) After yesterday’s announcement that the tournament will be played without fans, Southeastern Conference (SEC) announced this morning (3-13-20) the cancellation of the remainder of the SEC Tournament in Nashville. The Pac-12, Big Ten, AAC, Big 12 and ACC Tournaments have also been canceled.

• (3-12-20) As of now, the NCAA Tournament will go on as planned without fans in the stands.
UPDATE:NCAA men’s and women’s 2020 basketball tournaments have been canceled as well as all remaining winter and spring championships.

• (3-12-20) The SEC has announced that all sports are suspended until March 30. UPDATE: (3-13-20) Now suspended through April 15.

• (3-12-20) The Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) has announced that effective immediately, athletic related activities including all competition and formal practices are suspended until further notice.


NATIONAL

• (3-16-20) The NFL announced the 2020 draft will take place as scheduled on April 23-25 in Las Vegas but will be closed to the public. All events surrounding the draft are canceled.

• (3-13-20) NCAA has suspended all recruiting, on and off campus, for all sports until at least April 15.

• (3-13-20) NCAA will give Division I, II and III spring sports student-athletes another year of eligibility. Details of eligibility relief will be finalized at a later time.

• (3-13-20) Announced Friday, the 2020 Masters Tournament, the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and Drive, Chip & Putt National Finals have all been postponed.

• (3-12-20) Following a positive COVID-19 test on NBA Utah Jazz player Rudy Gobert as Utah and Oklahoma City were taking the floor to play, the NBA suspended the rest of the season. Thursday, it was announced that another Jazz player, Donovan Mitchell, has tested positive for COVID-19.

• (3-12-20) Major League Soccer (MLS) has suspended their season and US Soccer has cancelled their “friendly” game for both men’s and women’s national teams in March and April.

• (3-12-20) The PGA Player’s Championship starting today in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL will proceed without spectators. The LPGA is postponing their next three events. UPDATE: The Player’s Championship has canceled the rest of the tournament as well as the next two PGA Tour events.

• (3-12-20) Major League Baseball (MLB) has suspended games and activities. The MLB has canceled spring training games and delayed the start of the season by two weeks. UPDATE: The MLB has pushed back the start of the 2020 regular season at least eight weeks upon CDC recommendations.

• (3-12-20) National Hockey League (NHL) has suspended games and activities.

• (3-12-20) Boston Marathon, scheduled for April 20, has been postponed until fall. UPDATE: (3-13-20) It has been rescheduled for Monday, Sept. 14.

• (3-12-20) Nascar’s March 15 and March 22 races to be held without spectators. UPDATE: (3-13-20) Nascar is postponing the March 15 race at Atlanta Motor Speedway and the March 22 race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
