Marshals hold off Mayfield 53-49

Tyler Powell scores over out-stretched defender Tony Parrott in the Marshals 53-49 win over Mayfield. Powell led the Marshals with 23 points.

Taking the floor against Mayfield for the first time since Feb. 26, 2019 when the Cardinals knocked the Marshals out of the Region I Tournament in the first round, things started off rocky Tuesday in Mayfield.

The Marshals fell behind early by 10 points at 12-2 then scored the next five to pull to within five of Mayfield. A double-technical was called on Zion Harmon and Alonzo Daniel who got tangled up, and the Marshals pulled to within one point at 12-11 on a basket by Tyler Powell and 3-pointer by Harmon before the buzzer. Following the three, Harmon was called for his second technical which resulted in an ejection. Colby Kennemore sank the two technical shots to give Mayfield a 14-11 lead to end the first quarter.

The Marshals took their first lead at 15-14 and stretched it out to eight at 26-18, ending the first half on a buzzer-beater three by Bryce Flatt while holding Mayfield to four second quarter points. All four Mayfield points from DeAngelo Brooks who led Mayfield on the night with 16 points.

Brady Miller defending Mayfield’s Alonzo Daniel in the second half. The win over the Cardinals was the first for the Marshals since Feb. 14, 2017.

Powell, who led the Marshals with 23 points, scored nine of their 11 third quarter points to stretch the lead out to 16, ending the quarter up 40-24. They took their largest lead of 18 points at 44-26 following a basket by Bryce Flatt in the fourth quarter, but that lead would slip to seven points with under a minute to go.

Uncharacteristic missed foul shots for a team that is typically 85 percent and above from the free throw line, allowed the Cardinals to hang around but the Marshals held on to get the four point win. They improve to 19-10 while Mayfield drops to 17-9.

Saturday’s scheduled game against Trinity International has been cancelled and will be replaced by a home game against Livingston Central at 3:00, JV first followed by Varsity.
