Win over Calloway County earns #1 seed for Lady Marshals

With the #1 seed in the district tournament up for grabs, the Lady Marshals were all business from the opening tip against Calloway County, leading by eight at the end of the first quarter and as many as 21 points in the fourth quarter to earn a convincing 59-43 win over the Lady Lakers.

In their first district match-up on Jan. 24 in Draffenville, the Lady Marshals pulled out a 48-46 win, holding Charlee Settle to just four first half points and 18 for the game. A dominant performance by the Lady Marshals Friday at Calloway County didn’t out-shine the fact that Settle scored all of the Lady Lakers 17 first half points and the Region I Player of the Year and Miss Kentucky Basketball candidate went on to score 31 of the Lady Lakers 43 points.

Cayson Conner scored 14 of the Lady Marshals 27 first half points on her way to a 21 point night on 10 of 13 attempts. Jada Driver had her best scoring game of the season with 19 points, including four 3-pointers, two  coming in the first quarter that led to a 13-5 Lady Marshals lead. A steal and lay-in by Conner ended the quarter on an 18-10 lead.

Settle drew the Lady Lakers to within four points to open the second quarter but six straight points from Conner put the Lady Marshals back up by 10 at 24-14 and she finished out the half with her 14th point for a 27-17 halftime lead.

Both teams put up 11 points in the third quarter, Driver with five, Conner four and two from Halle Langhi for the Lady Marshals. Settle scored five for the Lady Lakers with help from Elle Carson who had four points and a basket by Skylar Waller.

The Lady Marshals out-scored Calloway County 21-15 in the fourth quarter with Driver leading the way with seven points to earn their ninth straight win, finish 4-0 in the district and improve to 19-8.

Two games at home remain on the regular schedule, Feb. 17 against Webster County and Feb. 18 against Hopkinsville.
