Thompson and Goodwin Facilitate Alzheimer’s Support Group in Marshall County

MURRAY, KY – Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive, degenerative disease which attacks the brain. It is the most common form of dementia and its causes are unknown. More than 2 million Americans are diagnosed with the disease.

The Alzheimer’s Association hosts a monthly support group in Benton for family members and caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s or another dementia related disease. The support group will meet on the first Wednesday of each month, at the Marshall County Public Library in Benton.

The setting is a small discussion group with an emphasis on sharing feelings, thoughts, experiences and education. The meetings typically last an hour.

Teresa Thompson, Community Educator for the Murray-Calloway County Hospital Geriatric Behavioral Health Unit and volunteer for the Alzheimer’s Association facilitates the support group along with volunteer co-facilitator, Michelle Goodwin, RN of Calvert City Convalescent Center. The support group’s next meeting is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, February 5th at 10:00 a.m., at the Marshall County Public Library, located on Poplar Street in Benton Kentucky.

According to Teresa, the support group is a free resource and anyone in the area who provides care for someone with dementia are invited to attend.
