Basketball season kicked off with Big Orange Madness

Bryce Flatt defends Tyler Powell’s move to the goal in Friday’s Big Orange Madness at Marshall County’s Reed Conder Gymnasium.

Fans got a chance to watch some basketball Friday evening at Marshall County’s Big Orange Madness which featured scrimmages from both South Marshall Middle and North Marshall Middle boys and girls teams, the Lady Marshals and Marshals and former high school players in the alumni games.

With both the Lady Marshals and Marshals tabbed as preseason First Region favorites, it should be a fun season to watch. The Lady Marshals finished last season First Region Runner-up and following a scrimmage at Muhlenberg County on Nov. 25 will play their first game at home against Goreville, Ill. on Dec. 3. Despite losing three key seniors from last year’s team, the Lady Marshals return First Region All-Tournament team players Cayson Conner and Halle Langhi along with Presley Jezik and Layne Pea and a talented crop of young players.

The Marshals kick the season off at home on Dec. 2 against Dawson Springs and have almost all of last year’s team back including seniors Tyler Stokes, Tyler Powell, Bryce Flatt, Chase Riley and Dawson Smothers along with junior Jay Nimmo and the addition of Zion Harmon, one of the nation’s top point guards.

Along with the teams, cheerleaders from all three schools were introduced and the dance team. The alumni game wrapped the evening up, featuring players from 1988 to 2018, many in the Marshall County record books and a few Hall of Famers.
