BES Wears Blue for World Diabetes Day

Marshall County Hospital Wound Care Clinic’s Clinical Coordinator Laura Bryant challenged Benton Elementary School to wear Blue today for World Diabetes Day.  She promised the class with the most participation that they would be rewarded with a Pizza Party!  Ms. Stephanie Ives Class, pictured above, won this challenge with 100% participation.  Laura plans to go meet with the students at Benton Elementary to talk more about Diabetes on the 26th of this month and have them do the “24-hour pop challenge”.  This is where the students will wear a rubber band on their wrist and pop it 4 times within the 24 hours.  This mimics what a diabetic feels like checking their sugar daily.

World Diabetes Day is very near and dear to the Wound Care Clinic’s heart.  Laura says that around 75% of their patients are diabetics and they would like to be able to spread more awareness in one way or another.  She has lots of programs that she is hoping to start in Marshall County that will help not only those with diabetes, but could also help prevent some people from developing type 2 diabetes.  Just a random fact, last year there was $327 billion spent on diabetes medications and supplies ($91 million of that was indirect such as socks, shoes, etc).  As you can see, diabetes is a very big problem in our country (and even right here in our county) and the more educated you are about it the better you can either take care of yourself or prevent yourself from developing it or other health concerns.
