Marshall County boys take 7th at state cross country meet

Saturday’s seventh place finish for the Marshall County boys at the KHSAA State Cross Country Meet was the best finish in over 20 years. In the past 23 years, Marshall County has qualified as a team 13 times, the longest streak coming by members of the current team with a stretch of four straight. The state meet held at Lexington’s Kentucky Horse Park featured 586 athletes and 75 teams in Class 3A boys and girls.

Trinity (Louisville) boys took the team state title and St. Xavier finished runner-up. Oldham County’s girls won the state title followed by duPont Manual in second and Marshall County girls finished 32nd.

Mason Cosner led Marshall County with a 32nd place finish in 17:01.76, recording the best finish for the Marshals since 2011 when Kyle Berry finished 22nd in 17:12.94. Following Mason, Christian Cosner placed 47th (17:16.15), Ethan McCarty 63rd (17:26.49), Cade Flatt 77th (17:33.14), Jackson Miller 79th (17:33.32) and Knox Sandlin 101st (17:43.70). The boy’s field had at 299 at the start line.

Kaycee Kemp crossed in 123rd place in 22:00.78 for the best Marshall County finish. Following Kemp, Emma Smith 135th (22:10.48), Gabbi Lovett 167th (22:41.01), Leah Vincek 207th (23:16.17), Taylor Bailey 214th (23:25.78), Zoie Swoope 219th (23:33.99) and Alexia Minter 252nd (24:36.42).

Conner O’Shea from Madison Central won the boy’s individual state title in 15:50.60 followed by teammate Brady Masters in second (16:02.58). Ciara O’Shea from Madison Central, sister to boys champion Conner O’Shea, won the girl’s individual state title in 18:39.42.

In Class 1A, the boy’s individual title went to DK Schnieders (16:04.22) from Holy Cross and Holy Cross won the team title. The girl’s Class 1A individual title went to Anna Rupp (18:58.46) from Lexington Christian and the team title went to Louisville Collegiate.

The Class 2A boy’s individual title was won by Ryan Maynard (16:14.25) from Taylor County and the team win went to Corbin. The girl’s individual winner was Addi Dewey (19:13.08) from Christian Academy and Scott County won the team state title.

Mason Cosner and Kaycee Kemp recorded the top finishes for Marshall County at the KHSAA State Cross Country Meet in Lexington on Saturday.
