Grimes Kicks Off Statewide Food Drive with Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Oct. 17, 2019) – Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes will kick off the 3rd annual Commonwealth of Kentucky Bowl, this Friday. This is a collaborative effort between the Office of the Secretary of State, Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana, Girl Scouts of Kentucky’s Wilderness Road and Feeding Kentucky.

The Commonwealth of Kentucky Bowl food drive is a friendly competition between Girl Scout troops in Kentucky and southern Indiana in support of the Kentucky Association of Food Banks. Last year, the competition was able to collect 71,423 pounds of food which fed 721 people served by Feeding Kentucky for an entire year.

“More than 700,000 Kentuckians don’t always know where they’ll get their next meal,” said Grimes. “That’s a heartbreaking number. We have to do everything we can to make sure no citizen of this Commonwealth goes hungry.”

Kentuckians can donate through November 1. Nonperishable food donations and monetary contributions are being accepted by Girl Scout troops across the Commonwealth, and will be co. $1 is equivalent to 8 pounds of food. Anyone can contribute at FeedingKY.org.

Grimes will be recognizing the Girl Scout troops participating in the event, and one troop will take home a trophy for most food collected. The Grand Champion will be the troop with the highest average pound of food per troop member, with regional winners also in the contest.

“I am proud to see so many young ladies across the Commonwealth working hard to make a difference,” Grimes said. “Our Girl Scouts are feeding those in need and becoming great future leaders.”
