Marshall County and McCracken County will play for the First Region Championship Wednesday, the first time since 2014 the two teams will meet in the title game. Last season, the Marshals lost 3-2 to Calloway County in the championship game after missing the tournament all-together in the three years since the 2014 win over the Mustangs.

Before the Marshals took the field against Tilghman, McCracken County beat Murray 4-1 for a shot at the region title, winning it once in the school’s seven-year history in 2016.

The Marshals first goal came off a shot by Collin Riley that was deflected back out and knocked in by Bryson Penn 13 minutes into the game.  Less than five minutes later, William Lynch scored for a 2-0 Marshals lead and the third goal of the half came from Kiefer Court on an assist from Penn, near the 18 minute mark for a 3-0 halftime lead.

The Marshals were called for a handball in the box less than a minute into the second half, the PK by Tilghman went high over the goal. Marshall County found the net again on a goal by Collin Riley on an assist by Penn nine minutes in, to go up 4-0. Tilghman avoided the shutout on a goal by Ivan Aburto with 11 minutes left in the game.

Marshall County out-shot Tilghman 18-8, eight on goal for the Marshals and two for the Tornados. Ben Burkeen had one save and Tilghman’s Morgan Mayo had four saves.

The championship game will be played at 6:00 on Wednesday at McCracken County High School.
