Marshals fall to #8 Henderson County 42-7

Henderson County, the #8 ranked team in Class 6A this week, was 4-1 coming into Friday’s district game against Marshall County and they picked up their first district win of the season over the Marshals 42-7, the first game between the two programs since 2014. The Colonels only loss came to Anderson County 21-17 in their last game on Sept. 20 before their bye week. The Marshals fall to 0-3 in the district and 2-5 overall.

Henderson County scored on their first possession on a three yard run by Logan Green following a 74 yard drive, the extra point kick failed for a 6-0 lead. The Colonels scored again on their next possession, a drive that began at their own 38, the touchdown coming on 30 yard run by Green and the extra point converted for a 13-0 lead at 5:33 in the first quarter.

The Marshals turned the ball over on downs on their next possession and the Colonels turned it into points following a 56 yard run by Layton Fletcher that set up the touchdown to start the second quarter on a 20-0 lead.

A fumble by Marshall County on their next possession gave the Colonels the ball, but a nice defensive stand by the Marshals gave them the ball back on downs but they turned it right back over on a fumble that Henderson County turned into a 38 yard touchdown pass on their first play from quarterback Sam Elliott to Edmund Brooks and a 27-0 lead.

The Colonels went half the distance of the field after forcing a Marshall County punt, and scored on a three yard run by Isaiah Fallen to lead 33-0 following a failed extra point attempt. On the kickoff, Henderson County dropped Garrett Parker in the end zone on the run back for a safety and a 35-0 halftime lead.

The Colonels final points of the game came in the third quarter on a 60 yard pass from Elliott to Brooks to lead 42-0. Dawson Smothers intercepted a pass from quarterback Ben Dalton, in for Elliott, which set up a 60 yard drive that put the Marshals on the board in the fourth quarter on a one yard run by Cody Sorrells.

The Colonels had 392 yards of total offence, 218 on the ground and 174 in the air. The Marshals had 98 yards of total offense, almost all of it rushing.

The Marshals will have a week off next Friday before their next game at home against Apollo (2-4) on Oct. 18. Apollo was off on Friday and will play Henderson County next week.
