The 2019 golf season opened for the Marshall County boys with a victory in the Best of the West tournament hosted by Greenwood High School and held at Boots Randolph State Park. The Marshals team score on Friday of 293 took the win by five strokes over Greenwood “A” with 298 Bowling Green “A” taking third with a score of 310

Jay Nimmo led the Marshals with a 4-under 68 that earned the junior medalist honors for the third year in a row at the Best of the West. Freshman Trey Wall shot a career low round of 73 (1-over par) which tied for fifth place individually. Senior Tyler Powell shot a solid 75 and junior Camdyn McLeod and freshman Preston Futrell both finished with 5-over par 77’s. This was also Futrell’s career best in his young high school career.

“What a great way to start the golf season with a team victory plus all of our players playing really well”, Head Coach Keith Bell said. “This is the first time in six years that a Marshall County golf team broke a team score of 300.”

Bell said watching two of the team’s younger players in Trey and Preston have career rounds plus McLeod fight back from a rough start, showing a lot of grit and determination was amazing.

“Tyler grinded thru the round and showed a ton of heart by never giving up which is what you want in a senior leader”, Bell said. “Jay’s round continues to solidify his status among the best players in the State of Kentucky.”

Bell said Friday’s efforts show what this team is capable of if they continue to work hard at practice and put time in on their own saying, “the results will be pretty special this season”.

Behind Nimmo in individual standings, Greenwood’s Michael Lang took second with a 1-under 71 and Greenwood eighth grader Jacob Lang shot an ever-par 72 for third.
