The Special Olympics Summer Games were held this past weekend at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, KY. Delegations from all over the state met at EKU for two days of competition. These delegations competed in track & field, swimming, soccer and Bocce Ball. Marshall County Special Olympics took 17 athletes and 3 unified partners to the games. The Marshall Delegation had a couple of first’s this year, we sent our first ever Bocce teams, and our first ever female pentathlon athlete. Haley Dunn was the only female to compete at the state games in the pentathlon events and she did our delegation proud. Lots of ribbons and medals came home from Richmond, but we are most proud of the accomplishments and good sportsmanship of our athletes. We appreciate the community support of Marshall County Special Olympics. Special Olympics goes beyond the sport and gives our athletes skills and confidence they can carry over into their everyday lives.
Marshall County Special Olympics has so much support from our community with fundraisers throughout the year that help make it possible for the teams to travel to these events.  They also had an anonymous $200 donation that came in to help them get to Richmond, for which they are very appreciative!!  Their next fundraising event is their Golf Scramble that will be held on August 24th, so be on the lookout for information in the next few days on how to sign up for that event!

In addition to the community support, they also have some amazing coaches that help them prepare for their competitions: Noah Steele, Travis Bradley, Hayden Hendley, Ed Wilson, and Dawn McLaughlin.  These coaches are also assisted by Phoebe McLaughlin and Lexie Myers!
