Calvert City, KY – The Calvert City Community Advisory Team (CCCAT) awarded a $3,770.00 educational Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) major-grant to Livingston Central High School and $6,224.00 in STEM mini-grants to six local elementary schools for spring 2019. The advisory team also awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarship money split evenly between the University of Kentucky College of Engineering Paducah Campus and West Kentucky Community and Technical College.
As part of project-based learning initiatives, Livingston County High School art students will use the major-grant to collaborate with construction technology and welding students to design and create interior furniture and decorative pieces for “Room 25,” a former storage area being repurposed as a student-centered collaborative makerspace. Thirty-five Livingston County High School students in grades 9-12 will participate.
Nine mini-grants were awarded to Benton Elementary School, Calvert City Elementary School, Central Elementary School, Jonathan Elementary School, North Livingston Elementary School, and South Marshall Elementary School.

“These major-grants allow teachers to purchase STEM-related educational equipment that is outside their regular classroom budgets,” said Toni Darnall, Senior Environmental Engineer for Westlake Vinyls, Inc. “And this is the second year the CCCAT has donated $10,000.00 in scholarships split evenly between the University of Kentucky College of Engineering Paducah Campus and West Kentucky Community and Technical College.”
Formed in 1992, the Calvert City Community Advisory Team membership includes area residents and representatives from 11 Calvert City chemical and industrial plants. The team meets eight times a year to discuss issues and share information of interest to both residents and the plants. The group provides a forum for the plants to interact directly with the community.
