CFS opens with win over Fulton City

Christian Fellowship’s Eagles baseball team opened the 2019 season with a 12-4 win over Fulton City, but have lost the next five games – two against Mayfield, two against Webster County and to Fulton County. CFS finished 3-12 last season and hope to improve on that mark this year.

In their season opener on March 18, CFS and Fulton City were scoreless through the first three innings before a double by Mikey Bivin brought in two runs in the top of the fourth inning to get the scoring rolling for the Eagles. A single by Beau Wilson brought another run in for a 3-0 lead. Fulton City scored one run in the bottom of the fourth but the Eagles followed up with another 3-run inning in the fifth, scoring on a single by Andrew Zabawa and RBI’s from Bivin and Wilson.

The win was sealed in the sixth inning with five runs coming in on a single by Ethan Binkley, bases loaded walk by Zabawa, a run scored when Andrew Allen was hit by a pitch, a run batted in by Bivin and sacrifice hit by Wilson.

Allen got the win on the mound in 4.1 innings, allowing three hits, one run with 10 strike outs.

On Tuesday, March 19, the Eagles took an early 1-0 lead over Mayfield in the top of the first, Zabawa scoring on an error, but the lead was quickly erased by Mayfield who scored 14 runs in the first four innings in their 14-1 win on eight hits. Reed Swindler picked up the win for the Cardinals in his four innings on the mound, allowing one hit and one run.

In their 12-2 loss on Thursday to Fulton County, CFS trailed 7-0 in the bottom of the third, getting two runs on the board but wouldn’t find home plate again. Fulton City scored runs in all six innings in the win on nine hits. The win went to senior pitcher Damyen Goodrich who pitched all six innings, striking out 11 batters. Dylan Hammond had the hot bat for the Pilots with two singles, a home run and three RBI’s.

CFS hosted Webster County on Saturday in a double-header. In the first game, Webster County jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, tied 4-4 in the bottom of the inning by the Eagles on an error on a ground ball by Wilson, a bases loaded walk, single by Brady Fletcher and a run scored on a wild pitch. Webster County put up eight big runs in the second inning and CFS added two in the inning, their final two runs of the game in the 17-6 loss. Drake Zimmerman led the Trojans at the plate going four for five with a double, triple and five RBI’s.

In game two of the Webster County double-header, CFS fell 6-3. Webster County led 5-0 after the top of the fourth, scoring their final run in the top of the fifth. All three of the Eagles runs came in the fourth inning on a single by Warren Parker, a wild pitch and bases loaded walk. Parker pitched all five innings for CFS, allowing six hits, six runs, striking out six batters.

Tuesday against Mayfield, a big 11-run fifth inning for the Cardinals led to a 17-1 win over CFS in five innings on 10 hits. Mayfield was led by Alonzo Daniel with three hits and two RBI’s. The Eagles only run came in the bottom of the second, Bivin taking home plate on a wild pitch.
