Marshals sweep three games in Big Orange Classic

Opening the season on an 8-6 loss to Lyon County, the Marshals followed it up with three straight wins in the Big Orange Classic, defeating Clayton, Mo. 12-2, Fort Zumwalt South, Mo. 4-0 and Mayfield 14-1.

Tuesday at Lyon County, the Marshals led 2-0 after their first at bat of the season, scoring on a ground out by Ty Buchmeier and single by Tyler Belcher. They added another run, scoring on an error in the top of the second to lead 3-0 before Lyon County scored in the bottom of the second on a 2-run home run off the bat of Jake Klueppel. Lyon County took the lead in the bottom of the third and added one run in the bottom of the fourth to go up 6-3.

Jordan Riley hit a 2-run homer in the top of the fifth for the Marshals to cut the Lyons lead to one but the lead stretched back to 8-5 on a 2-run fifth inning for Lyon County. The Marshals final run came in the sixth off a single by Cole Griggs, leaving one runner stranded in the top of the seventh.

As host of the Big Orange Classic, the Marshals swept all three of their games starting with Thursday’s 12-2 win over Clayton, MO. Amassing a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Marshals put together a 6-run inning scoring on a 3-run triple by Cole Griggs, double by Belcher and an error to lead 11-2. The final run of the game coming in the bottom of the sixth when Jacob Landis crossed home plate on an error.

Griffen Ives got the win on the mound for the Marshals in five innings of work, allowing eight hits and two runs. Cole Griggs hit a single and triple and finished with three RBI’s. Johnson hit a single, double and had one RBI.

Weston Harper picked up the shut out win from the mound against Ft. Zumwalt South. Harper pitched four innings, allowing four hits and no runs.

Friday against Fort Zumwalt South, four runs in the bottom of the fourth was all the Marshals needed in their 4-0 win. The inning began on a double by Cole Griggs with Belcher reaching after being hit by a pitch. A double by Skylar Brown brought in the first two runs, a sacrifice from Johnson scored the third and the fourth on an error that brought Isiah Neeble to home plate.

Weston Harper earned the shut out in four innings on the mound, allowing four hits, zero runs and striking out five.

In their final game of the Big Orange Classic Saturday, the Marshals stunned Mayfield with 17 runs in the second inning, beating the Cardinals 18-1 in three innings behind a no-hitter from Brown. Mayfield scored first in the top of the first inning on a ground out by Ethan Couch. The Marshals tied it in the bottom of the inning on a Belcher ground out that brought in Buchmeier.

The 17 runs in the second inning came on two 2-run singles by Buchmeier and Stockdale, a double by Belcher, two singles from Brown, sacrifice by Johnson, home plate steal by Cole Griggs and seven bases loaded walks.
