Lady Marshals advance to play Murray in district title game

Tuesday’s 4th District Tournament semi-final was all about winning and moving on. For the Lady Marshals, their season will continue on to the title game against Murray on Thursday and an automatic spot in the Region 1 Tournament after defeating Calloway County 41-39. The Lady Lakers season ends at 21-8.

Calloway County took charge early with an 8-0 lead, prompting a Marshall County time out. Out of the time out, Cayson Conner got the Lady Marshals on the board, but that was followed by Charlee Settle’s sixth point of the game for a 10-2 Lady Laker lead. Presley Jezik dropped in a three to cut the Calloway County lead to five, then two straight baskets from Conner off of turnovers cut the lead to one. Settle put Calloway County back up by three but a free throw by Jezik and basket by Conner tied the game 12-12 at the end of the quarter.

Cayson Conner scored on this fast break to the basket in Tuesday’s win over Calloway County. Conner led the Lady Marshals with 12 points.

Calloway County scored the first four points of the second quarter to lead by four. It was cut to one point on a 3-pointer by Layne Pea and following free throws from Settle, Pea buried her second straight three to give the Lady Marshals their first lead of the game at 18-17. The Lady Marshals stretched their lead out to five points in the quarter and finished out the first half leading 28-23.

Elle Carson dropped in a three for the Lady Lakers to open the second half, cutting the lead to two points. Lorin Powell’s free throw, rebound and put-back off her second miss at the line put the lead back to five. Kelly Underhill and Carson scored the next five for Calloway County to tie the game at 31-31 and Powell gave the Lady Marshals their final four points of the quarter for a 35-33 lead.

Settle tied the game to open the fourth quarter and with 2:32 left in the game, they were tied again at 37. Halle Langhi hit two free throws for a two-point Lady Marshals lead, tied again at 39 by Settle before a basket by Powell with 1:30 left, put them back up by two points at 41-39. Powell was fouled with 11.2 seconds to go but missed at the line, giving Calloway a chance to tie but Settle’s shot was off the mark before the final buzzer.

Settle led the Lady Lakers with 23 of their 39 points. Conner led the Lady Marshals with 12 points.

Marshall County will play Murray in the 4th District Championship at Calloway County on Thursday at 6:00.
