KY Highway Crews Preparing for Winter Weather Event Friday & Saturday (District 1)

Traffic ADVISORY

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 1 Snow & Ice Team is preparing for a winter weather event that is expected to include freezing rain starting Friday afternoon with possible impacts on traffic into Saturday morning.

Due to rain in the forecast before temperatures drop below freezing, crews in Kentucky’s 12 westernmost counties will be unable to pre-treat for this event.

Based on the latest forecast update, a winter mix that is likely to include freezing rain is expected to move across the region starting around 4:00 p.m., Friday, continuing until the early morning hours on Saturday.  Ice accumulations are expected to be enough to impact travel during the overnight hours and into the early morning on Saturday.

Highway crews across our District 1 counties will be prepared to spread salt as the storm develops.  Crews will be altering work schedules to be prepared to maintain continuous snow and ice operations once the winter precipitation starts on Friday afternoon.

During the early hours of this event the main concern will be icing of bridges and overpasses.

As always, any winter weather event that includes freezing rain and the possibility of accumulating ice can severely limit the ability of highway crews to improve driving conditions.  Motorists should avoid travel during the overnight hours Friday.

Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing around Mid-Morning, Saturday, possibly helping to improve driving conditons through the day.

Motorsts who plan to be on the road overnight Friday and into Saturday morning, or have travel plans to neighboring states, should be aware that freezing rain is expected and that ice accumulations are likely create hazardous driving conditions.

Motorsts are encouraged to monitor the National Weather Service (https://www.facebook.com/NWSPaducah/) and area news media outlets for weather updates while keeping a close watch on localized driving conditions.

Updates as appropriate.
