Marshals lose first half lead in 62-51 loss to Mayfield

Coming into Tuesday’s game at Marshall County, Mayfield at 20-7 was coming off a big 22-point win over Graves County on Friday. A pre-season number one pick in Region 1, Mayfield has seasoned and battle-tested seniors starting with Conner Guthrie who has committed to Bethel University and was named Region 1 Player of the Year along with Carson Guthrie, Kent Trey Matthews and Desean Jones in what looks to be the Cardinals year to possible win the region.

The Marshals led through the first half and held the lead until the 2:38 mark in the third quarter. After leading 39-35 at halftime, Mayfield went on to out-score the Marshals 18-5 in the third quarter and by five points in the fourth quarter to win 62-51.

Marshall County led by as many as 10 points in the first quarter, off to a 2-0 start by Tyler Stokes, tied by Jones but from there it was the Marshals quarter. A basket by Tyler Powell and three from Jay Nimmo put the Marshals up 7-2, cut by two points on free throws by Carson Guthrie. A three from Powell, two straight baskets by Bryce Flatt including a three and basket from Kade Driver led to a 17-7 lead that was cut to 17-11 at the end of the quarter on Mayfield baskets by Jones and Conner Guthrie.

The Marshals out-scored the Cardinals 13-10 in the second quarter to lead 30-21 at halftime. Mayfield closed the gap to four points before a basket by Stokes that drew the foul for a three point play, put the Marshal back up by nine, a lead they held at halftime.

Mayfield opened the second half with a quick 9-2 run to tie the game up at 32, led by five points from Matthews prompting a Marshall County time out. Out of the time out, Nimmo dropped in a much need 3-pointer, but Jones scored and drew the foul to tie the game again at 35. Carson Guthrie scored and drew the foul to put Mayfield up 38-35, their first lead of the game and they led by four going into the fourth quarter.

Trailing 44-37 in the fourth, Nimmo drew the Marshals to within four points with a three before an 8-0 run by the Cardinals stretched their lead out to 12 points. The Marshals battled back to with in seven following two straight threes by Driver and Stokes but fell by 11 after a 6-2 run by Mayfield to finish out the game.

Stokes led the Marshals with 17 points, Jones led Mayfield with 17.

The Marshals will finish out their regular season on Thursday at home against Pope County, Ill. They will play Calloway County on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at Calloway County in the district tournament.
