KY Highway Crews Ramping Down Snow & Ice Operations (D1)

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Crews in District 1 are ramping down snow and ice operations. Most crews have completed plowing and salt of all highways in their counties.

About half of the crews have completed rounds and headed home. The rest will complete operations by about 6:00 p.m., CST.

Highway crews got some major help from the sun today as sunshine raised pavement temperatures to help activate salt and other ice-fighting chemicals.

During the overnight hours when weather conditions were at their worst, crews were aided by motorists who chose to stay off the road. There was a substantial drop in traffic volume that helped crews negotiate some pretty brutal driving conditions as they went about their work of salting and plowing highways.

Motorists are reminded that with a low of around 17 degrees overnight there is an opportunity for re-freezing, especially in areas where moisture from melting snow has run onto driving surfaces. Extra caution is required during the overnight hours and on the morning commute Monday.

The District 1 Snow & Ice Team is already monitoring a chance of snow expected to arrive during the overnight hours on Tuesday or on Wednesday morning. At this time that system is expected to produce less than an inch of snow across the region, but could be upgraded as the forecast evolves over the next few days.
