Stokes led with 23 in Marshals win over Calloway County

Tyler Stokes scored 23 points to lead the Marshals in their 54-43 district win over Calloway County Friday. A three from Stokes, a basket by Bryce Flatt and another three from Jay Nimmo opened the game on an 8-0 lead for the Marshals. A basket by Kade Mize put the Lakers on the board, the Marshals  going on to lead 16-7 at the end of the first quarter.

The Marshals took their largest first half lead of 11 points at 20-9 in the second quarter but the Lakers cut it to a five point lead with 53 seconds left in the quarter, prompting a Marshall County time out. Austin Riley scored the final points of the first half to put the Marshals up 29-22. Stokes and Mize both finished the first half of play with 11 points.

Austin Riley, guarding Jackson Chapman, is back on the floor for the Marshals after missing some games with an injury.

Mize and Chandler Steele combined for the Lakers first seven points of the third quarter to cut the Marshals lead to two points at 31-29 before a timely 3-pointer by Chase Riley put the lead back to five. Cade Butler’s free throw and a three by Mize brought the Lakers to within one point at 34-33, the closest they would get in the game. The Marshals went on to out-score the Lakers 9-2, Austin Riley again scoring the final points of the quarter with a three, to finish the third quarter on an eight point lead.

Steele scored to cut the lead to six to start the fourth quarter, but it quickly stretched out to 11 points on a three by Tyler Powell and basket by Stokes who scored six of the Marshals 11 points in the final quarter on their way to an 11 point win.

The Marshals improve to 8-7 while the Lakers drop to 5-9. Marshall County will play Saturday at 4:45 in Mustang Madness against Downey Christian out of Orlando, Florida and will try to contain junior Julian Newman who is averaging over 30 points per game.
