Lady Marshals 2-1 in Panama City Beach, improve to 12-2

Playing in the Marlin Holiday Classic in Panama City Beach, FL, the Lady Marshals came away with two wins and one loss, earning second place in the Classic and improving their record to 12-2. Wins came over Alma Bryant (AL) 66-47 and Bartram Trail (FL) 71-62 and their one loss coming from Charles Henderson (AL) 55-48.

Led by Lorin Powell with 18 points and Layne Pea with 17, the Lady Marshals defeated Alma Bryant in their first game Thursday. Leading by one point after the first quarter, the Lady Marshals stretched their lead to 15 points at halftime and held onto the 15 point lead at the end of the third quarter on their way to a 66-47 win.

The Lady Marshals tipped off against Charles Henderson on Friday, the reigning Alabama 5A state champions. Down by two points at the end of the first quarter and 11 at halftime, the Lady Marshals held Charles Henderson scoreless in the third quarter to take a 39-34 lead. Charles Henderson out-scored the Lady Marshals in the fourth quarter 21-9 to win 55-48. Cayson Conner led with 12 points and Tera Colson added 11.

In their final game Saturday, the Lady Marshals played Bartram Trail (FL), both teams coming into the game with 11-2 records. The Lady Marshals led 7-0 early before Bartram Trail scored the next six straight to cut the lead to one point. Tied 15-15, a basket by Whitnee Miller gave the Lady Marshals a two-point lead at the end of the first quarter.

Bartram Trail took their first lead at 21-20 in the second quarter but the Lady Marshals finished out the half on a 3-pointer by Tera Colson and basket by Pea to lead 32-30 at halftime.

Bartram Trail tied the game at 32 coming out of the half with Langhi’s basket giving the lead back to the Lady Marshals and they would go on to out-score them 24-12 to lead 56-42 at the end of the third quarter.

The 14-point fourth quarter lead was trimmed to nine points after Bartram Trail scored nine straight to cut it to 60-51. Both teams finished out the game with 11 points each and the Lady Marshals held on to win 71-62.
