Lady Marshals sweep Holiday Classic games, improve to 10-1

Lorin Powell led the way for the Lady Marshals with 16 points in their 65-58 win over Dyer County, TN.

Winning three games in three days at their Lady Marshal Holiday Classic, the Lady Marshals are 10-1 which is their best start dating back to the 1999-2000 season. After a few days break, the Lady Marshals will head to Panama City, FL to play in the Marlin Holiday Classic Dec. 28-30.

Following their first win over Caldwell County in the Holiday Classic on Thursday, the Lady Marshals played Dyer County, TN, coming away with a 65-58 win in a very competitive, physical game. Dyer County jumped out to an 8-0 lead before the Lady Marshals got on the board with a 2-pointer by Presley Jezik, closing in on the lead at 10-8 following Jezik’s second three of the quarter. They finished out the quarter with two straight threes from Cayson Conner and Jezik to trail 16-14.

Conner scored the first basket of the second quarter to tie followed by a 3-pointer by Layne Pea to give the Lady Marshals their first lead at 19-16. Tied again on a three by Katelyn Anderson, both teams finished out the half with five points for a 24-24 tie at halftime.

The Lady Marshals made several trips to the free throw line in the third quarter as Dyer County racked up fouls. Halle Langhi scored nine of their 19 third quarter points, Lorin Powell added five, Tera Colson three and two points from Whitnee Miller to lead 43-36.

Dyer County cut the Lady Marshals lead to three points in the fourth quarter before two straight threes by Pea stretched it back out to a nine point lead. Two baskets by Powell put them up by 12 answered by four straight free throws by the Lady Choctaws to cut it back to an eight point lead at 55-47. The Lady Marshals final 10 points of the game came from Powell with five, Langhi and Pea a basket each and a free throw by Conner for the seven point win.

Powell led the Lady Marshals with 16 points, Anderson led Dyer County with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Halle Langhi, here in the Lady Marshals game on Thursday against Caldwell County, led the Lady Marshals with 16 points in their win over Washington County.

Tipping off in their final game of the Holiday Classic at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, the Lady Marshals took on Washington County. The Lady Commanderettes lost to Carlisle County 62-52 in their first game on Thursday then defeated St. Mary 69-43 Friday.

The Lady Marshals set the tone in this one early, led by Langhi with six and getting points from seven different players to take a 20-4 first quarter lead. Miller scored the first four points of the second quarter, leading the quarter in scoring with six, on the Lady Marshals way to a 35-11 halftime lead.

Langhi scored half of the Lady Marshals 12 third quarter points with baskets also coming from Powell, Jezik and Conner for a 47-18 lead. Freshman Neely Northcott scored four of her six points off the bench to start the fourth quarter on a 51-18 lead. Jezik, Gabbi Lovett, Tia Thorpe, Jordyn Reed, Sarah Stokes and Maddie Darnall all scored in the fourth to add to the 13 players with points in the 63-22 win.

Langhi led the Lady Marshals with 16 points, Maddy Riley led Washington County with seven points.
