Graves County Eagles, Lady Eagles open Hoopfest with wins

The basketball spotlight shines on Marshall County’s Reed Conder Gymnasium for the next few days as the 2018 Marshall County Hoopfest kicked off Thursday with a slate of four games. The first game featured the boy’s teams from Graves County and Massac County.

The Eagles led by four at the end of the first quarter and both teams headed to the locker room at halftime tied at 29. Graves County out-scored Massac County by 10 points in the second half to win 75-65 behind 30 points from senior forward Jacob Savage. Savage also pulled in 14 rebounds and was selected MVP. Massac County was led in scoring by Julian Russell with 19 points, Jase Mizell with 14 and 10 from MarShon Merriel.

Graves County returns six seniors from last year’s Region I runner-up team that includes guards Ryan Mathis who scored 15 points and Jordyn Naranjo with 14 points. Naranjo recently signed to play baseball at Murray State.

Graves County’s girls tipped off in the second game of the Hoopfest Thursday against Trinity (Whitesville). After leading by three points at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Eagles kicked it in gear and cruised the rest of the way to win 75-27. Sophomore center, Sophie Galloway, led Graves County with 18 points and nine rebounds to earn the game MVP award. A lean Trinity team of just six players, was led in scoring by Cassidy Morris with 17 points.
