CFS heads to 4th District Championship after five-set win over Calloway

Christian Fellowship and Calloway County split their regular season games, CFS winning 3-0 in their first meeting on September 4th and Calloway County winning in five sets 3-2 just six days ago setting up a classic battle in Monday’s semi-final of the 4th District Tournament.

The Lady Eagles led from start to finish in the first set but after leading by eight at 16-8, the Lady Lakers went on an 8-1 run to pull to within one point. Two straight kills by Abigail Cima, who led with 24 in the match, gave momentum back to the Lady Eagles, going on to take the first set 25-17.

Calloway County took charge early in set two, taking a 12-4 lead and maintaining some distance until CFS closed to within six points at 23-17, but held on to take set two 25-17. In set three, the Lady Eagles jumped out to an 8-2 lead, a lead they never gave up, taking the third set 25-18 to take a 2-1 edge in the match.

The Lady Lakers took charge again in the fourth set, leading by as many as seven points before CFS closed the gap on a block by Cima, kill by Cima and ace from Emma Alexander to pull to within a point, trailing 15-14. Calloway County stretched their lead back out to five points but the relentless Lady Eagles battled to tie it up at 24-24 before the Lady Lakers took the 26-24 win to tie the match up at 2-2.

Calloway County took a quick 4-0 lead in the fifth and final set before a kill by Cima put the Lady Eagles on the board and they would tie the set at 5-5 with three more ties to follow before the Lady Lakers took a two-point advantage at 10-8. Out of a timeout from CFS Coach Suzie Burnett, the Lady Eagles dropped one more point to Calloway County before tying the game at 11-11, then taking their first lead of the set at 12-11, going on to claim the fifth set 15-12 for the win.

Cima led the Lady Eagles at the net in kills with 24, Emma Fletcher had 14 kills, Maggie Wagner with nine and Lexi Hovekamp had four. Hovekamp recorded three aces and Wagner two of the eight total aces by the Lady Eagles. Emma Alexander had 28 assists in the win and their 10 blocks came from Cima with five, Hovekamp with three and Wagner with two.

They will meet Marshall County in Tuesday’s 4th District Championship at Calloway County at 6:00.
