“Jim Shelton Field” at Carroll Traylor Stadium dedicated Friday

Family members of the late Coach Jim Shelton were on the field with WCBL Sports Director Jeff Waters, as the field at Carroll Traylor Stadium was dedicated as “Jim Shelton Field” during halftime of the Marshals final home game.

Jim Shelton is the winningest coach in Marshall County High School football program history, joining the coaching staff in 1976 and for 14 seasons served as an assistant under Larry Crouse and Doc Sanders. In 1990, Shelton became head coach of the Marshals and in 11 seasons, guided the Marshals to 78 wins, two district championships, two district runner-up finishes and a regional championship in 1995.

The 1998 team under Shelton, set the program record for most wins in a season with 11 and the programs longest winning streak of 10 games. In 1992, Shelton led the program to its first play-off victory and from 1994-2000, the Marshals averaged eight wins a season and won seven play-off games.

In 1997, Shelton was voted Kentucky’s Coach of the Year by the Associated Press. Shelton was known for caring for the football field like it was his own lawn, doing a majority of the maintenance. He passed away unexpectedly in July 2013 before his induction into the Marshall County Athletic Hall of Fame.

His family, as well as many former players, were on hand Friday for the dedication of the field as “Jim Shelton Field” at Carroll Traylor Stadium.
